Why Your Hips Might Feel Tight
That tight feeling in your hips is incredibly common. Whether you spend most of your day sitting, exercise regularly, or are simply noticing that your movement doesn't feel quite as easy as it used to, there can be several reasons your hips feel restricted.
It Isn't Always About Flexibility
When your hips feel tight, it doesn't necessarily mean you need to stretch more. Your body may create a feeling of tightness when muscles are working harder to provide stability, when a joint isn't moving comfortably, or when you've developed movement habits that your body has adapted to over time.
Long periods of sitting can also contribute. Staying in one position for hours means your hips aren't getting much opportunity to move through their full range of motion.
Your Hips Don't Work Alone
Your hips are part of a larger movement system. Your pelvis, low back, core, knees, and feet all influence how your hips move. Sometimes what feels like a “tight hip” may be related to how other areas of your body are moving and compensating.
This is one reason we look at the body as a whole rather than focusing only on the area that feels uncomfortable.
What Can Help?
Regular movement is a great place to start. Changing positions throughout the day, walking, strengthening the muscles around your hips, and exploring comfortable ranges of motion can all help keep your body moving well.
Hands-on care, including chiropractic care and massage, may also be helpful for addressing areas of stiffness or muscular tension and supporting comfortable movement.
Most importantly, you don't have to force your body into a stretch to make progress. Sometimes the best approach is simply giving your body more opportunities to move, adapt, and feel comfortable.
Your hips were made to move. Give them a little variety, a little attention, and a little patience.
